AC Installation Timeline: What to Expect on Install Day
A plain-English walk through central AC install day, from the first walkthrough to final startup, plus how to get your home ready.
How long a central AC install usually takes
Most straightforward central AC replacements take one full day. A typical swap starts in the morning and wraps up in the late afternoon. New ductwork, a new equipment pad, or a new refrigerant line set can push the job into a second day. Ask for the expected timeline before install day so you can plan around it.
What happens, step by step
The crew protects your floors and walks the job with you first. They recover the refrigerant from the old system, disconnect it, and remove the old indoor coil and outdoor unit. Then they set the new equipment, connect the refrigerant lines and electrical, and check the drain. Startup comes last, where they pull a vacuum, charge the system, and test airflow and temperatures.
How to prep your house
Clear a path from the front door to the indoor unit and around the outdoor unit. Many Ashburn and Loudoun homes keep the air handler in an attic, basement, or closet, so move stored boxes and furniture away from it. Trim shrubs and plants back from the outdoor unit so the crew has room to work. Put pets in a quiet room, because doors will open and close all day.
What to expect while they work
The system will be off for most of the day, and power to parts of the house may cut out briefly if the electrical panel needs work. You will hear drilling, cutting, and some banging. In a Northern Virginia July the house will warm up, so plan errands for the hottest hours or keep fans running. Be home at the start and near the end so you can ask questions and see the finished work.
Before the crew leaves
Ask the lead installer to show you the thermostat settings and where the filter goes. Confirm where the shutoff switch is and where the drain line exits. Check that the work area is swept and the old equipment is gone. Write down the model and serial numbers and ask how warranty registration works.
Common questions
Can I stay home during the install?
Yes, and most people do. Expect noise and open doors, so keep kids and pets away from the work areas. If you want to talk through your specific house before install day, call VIP General HVAC Services at (571) 761-5379.
Will I have cooling by that evening?
On a straightforward swap, the new system is usually running by the end of the day. A permit issue, a parts problem, or a duct repair can stretch the job. Ask your installer what the plan is if the work runs long.
Does an AC replacement need a permit or inspection?
Many Northern Virginia jurisdictions require a permit for a system replacement, and an inspection can follow the install. Ask your installer who pulls the permit and how the inspection gets scheduled.
